Illegal Use of a motor vehicle

The Law -

Driving, using (even as a passenger), or interfering with a motor vehicle knowing that such use is without the owner's consent is a serious offence under the Criminal Law Consolidation Act 1935 [s.86A].

The Maximum Penalty for Illegal Use of a motor vehicle

The maximum penalty for a first offence is up to two years in gaol.

For a second offence, the penalty is a minimum of three months up to a maximum
of four years gaol.

A person convicted of illegal use of a motor vehicle will also be disqualified from driving for at least twelve months [s.86A(2)]. This applies to both first and subsequent offences.
